TAKING
THE PEGASUS BRIDGE - JUNE 5 1944
|
After
the allies landed on the coasts of France, the days of the 'Third
Reich' were counted ! |
|
It
all started at june 6, 1944. The allies were ready and determined to
kick the Germans out of the occupied countries |
|
A
very, very important and vital bridge had to be taken by the Allies
in the night of june 5, preceeding on the invasion in France. |
|
Now,
70 yeras later a memorial flight took place over the Pegasus Bridge,
with a Spitfire and a Typhoon in D-Day colors |
|
Not
so many veterans of that day and place are still alive, but some
travelled to the bridge that changed the situation in Europe |

By
the time, many Typhoons joined the actions, but since there was no
flying example the Spitfire took the 'honneurs' . |
![](../01-2014/PenV/Pegasus/Spitfire%20&%20Typhoon.jpg) |
The
black-white stripes were to make all allied planes recognizable, and
were paited on all planes the night before, sometimes even with
brooms |

The
old veterans had a day of many thoughts to old friens that died
these days. They are the lucky ones to remember |

The
Typhoon (Eurofighter) and the 'Spit' came from Waddington in the UK
..... |

....
and both pilots also concidered the participation as a great honour
! |

An
example of the Typhoon from those days |
![](/01-2014/PenV/Pegasus/Typhoon%20(PNG)%20file.png) |
The
Typhoon is our 'Guardian' now in many countries, a formidable plane
and very capable. |

These
men that landed on the beaches were to use pegasus Bridge later on.
First they had to fight their corridors, it took so many lives..... |

The
Germans could not hold. A really perfect film has been made, called 'The
Longuest Day', Hans Christian Blech had a wonderful role |
![](/01-2014/PenV/Pegasus/Pegasus%20Brug%20june%201944.jpg) |
The
bridge was taken, and could be used by the allies. |

At
this picture you even see the gliders that were used to approach
unheard and by surprise |

A
fragment fron the fil 'The Longuest Day', where the Germans made
several tactical mistakes. |

This
film should be shown at all schools, to know what happened in that
time, which is by the way only a very small part. |

Here
ends our small Pegasus story, hope you liked it anyway. |
